Quirky Kate Spade Salt and Pepper Shakers

Salt & pepper shakers are necessities. They are a permanent fixture on almost every kitchen counter top or dining room table. For years, we used the generic glass shakers with silver tops and hid them in our cupboard, only letting them see the light of day when it was absolutely necessary. But this week, we decided that it was time to let our salt & pepper shakers take center stage and become the focal point of our dining room table.

Make Your Own TV Bench

Our Brooklyn neighbors tend to put a lot of old furniture on the sidewalk–and bless ‘em for it, because we’ve saved hundreds of dollars using their old coffee tables, wood chairs, etc. Recently, however, we purchased a brand-spankin’ new coffee table for the living room, which rendered the old sidewalk table (on which we had our TV) somewhat shabby by comparison.

New Plumbing-Pipe Closets

Our charming, century-old Brooklyn apartment has lots to love, but for the past two years, one major flaw was complicating our clothing storage: plaster walls (that, and the fact that our bedroom has no built-in closets).

Easy Upgrade: Filament Bulbs

We’re suckers for vintage industrial accents, but the pieces we gravitate toward most–lamps, side tables, and shelving units–have an annoying tendency to be, um….RIDICULOUSLY expensive. Which is funny, because wouldn’t you expect beat-up old office supplies to be the cheapest antiques around?

New Best Friend: Staple/Nail Gun

Who knew that $30 could buy so much happiness? We recently purchased a staple/nail gun, and we’re confident that our life will never be the same.

Trend Watch: Convex Mirrors

Sure, you’ve seen convex mirrors in car garages and corner delis, but who knew they could be so downright good-lookin’ with the addition of a little gold leaf and and some ornate wood moulding?

Love for the Ombre Rug

We find ombre rugs well suited to dwellings with a lot of clean lines and contemporary furniture, although mixing in a few well-chosen vintage pieces could add character to a living room featuring a statement ombre piece.

La Vida Rustica

Brooklynites are no strangers to rustic apartment elements. If it weren’t for those pesky frontiersmen in the 1800’s, it’s highly likely that our fine borough would be credited with the very invention of “antler” accents.R

Decorating with Vintage Signage

By now everyone has seen vintage signage used to decorate the home in magazines like Domino or Elle Decor, but more often than not those pieces are randomly accrued antiques–not that that’s a bad thing, but we prefer our vintage buys to have some kind of personal connection to place or time.
